Lawson-Penner limit and single passage free electron lasers performances
Abstract
Developments related to the realization of Free Electron Lasers (FEL) covering an extended range of the electromagnetic spectrum are briefly examined, taking into account storage-rings (SR), single passage devices (SPD), and the Super Mode (SM) theory. Attention is given to inhomogeneous broadening, gain, the Lawson-Penner law, and the Lawson-Penner limit and FEL gain. It is found that the SM theory can be very effective in giving 'practical' formulas for the FEL gain. The limits of the performance of a single passage FEL device imposed by the Lawson-Penner law are discussed on the basis of the SM theory.
