Optical fiber transmission - From conception to prominence in 20 years
Abstract
Progress made in optical fiber transmission is reviewed, emphasizing the medium. The subjects discussed include: low-loss fibers, optical fiber bandwidth, the physical strength of optical fibers, cabling and splicing, field experiments and systems, and the outlook for the future. Cross-sections of various types of cables are shown, and information on different kinds of fibers is given.
