An experiment regarding the computer-aided optimization of a communication system with an adaptive delta-modulation
Abstract
The employment of digital communication systems increases currently more and more, and the methods of computer-aided optimization provide an aid for improving the characteristics of such systems. However, the computer-aided optimization of the considered communications systems is not sufficiently studied. The reasons for this situation are related to the great difficulties involved in such studies and the extensive amounts of computing time required. A study of an adaptive delta-modulation with a one-bit memory has been conducted by Jayant (1970), while Zetlerberg and Uddenfeldt (1974) have considered adaptive delta-modulation with delayed decision. In the present investigation, the results obtained in previous studies are discussed, and the various relations involved in the optimization procedure are explored, taking into account the effectiveness function and computing time requirements. It is found that the methods of computer-aided optimization are effective in the design of optimal digital communication systems.
