Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos - the Swedish experience.
Abstract
Records from 221 nights scheduled for observations with the Swedish Royal Academy 60 cm telescope at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma, Canary Islands, have been analysed concerning weather parameters. These parameters describe sky quality for photometry and spectroscopy, wind speed and wind direction, local humidity, temperature and image quality. The percentage of photometric nights during the time analysed is 59, whereas the corresponding percentage for spectroscopic nights is 78. wind is not a great problem except when air-borne dust is present. Local humidity does not imply any significant limits for observations below the red spectral region. Temperatures are normally favourable for observing. Image quality seens to be very good during a large part of the observing time. The present data indicate that for around 40 percent of photometric and spectroscopic nights the seeing is better than one arc second.
