Numerical simulation of the interaction of drift solitons and anticyclones
Abstract
A numerical analysis is made of the properties of soliton solutions to the Petviashvili (1980) vortex equation (PVE) and of the stationary solution of Petviashvili and Ian'kov (1982). It is shown that stable soliton solutions exist for the PVE. For low vortex velocities or for low values of the coefficient a, the solitons pass through each other without shape distortion. The increase in velocity and coefficient a leads to the absorption of the slow vortex by the faster one. However, these large values of velocity go beyond the limits of the applicability of the PVE.
