Range safety system initiates flight termination
Abstract
A sophisticated 'high alphabet' modulation technique is used by the Space Shuttle flight termination subsystems's range safety receiver-recorder, in order to ensure error-free performance. Characters in the command world are constituted of two simultaneously transmitted audio tones that are selected from seven possible tones. These tones are in the lower portion of the Inter-Range Instrumentation Group frequency, and are related harmonically to 1050 Hz. The range safety systems in offering a far lower probability of undesired outputs caused by interfering signals. Both the receiver and decoder sections are schematized.
