X-ray studies of quasars
Abstract
Einstein Observatory data for 235 quasars and 38 type-I Seyferts in the 0.5-4.5 keV band are statistically studied, with a view to the evolution of X-ray radiation. A QE band connecting these active galaxies with respect to central compact object energy and mass distribution is found in an L(x)-z plot of the 273 objects, and a preliminary analysis of the QE band sequence indicates that quasars may quickly cross the lower envelope of the band, leave it, and then disappear. It is suggested in light of these findings that active galactic nuclei may be manifestations of galactic nuclei in an excited state under specific conditions. Two evolutionary stages are found in the optical luminosities of the present quasars, namely the optically bright and optically faint. In each of these, the parameters characterizing the typical properties of quasars are distinctive.
