The appearance of solitary vortex pairs in two-dimensional turbulent wakes
Abstract
Experimental results are reported for the generation of coupled vortices in a two-dimensional wake and are modeled numerically. The onset of vortex pairs in the wake of a cylinder in a flow was studied by flow visualization and modeled in terms of the Re, viscosity, flow velocity, and cylinder diameter. The vortices were kept two-dimensional by forming a von Karman vortex street with a thin film of soapy water. A simulation was performed using the Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible two-dimensional flow, with the flow constrained to 18 alternating vortices, each with a Gaussian stream function. The numerical simulation faithfully reproduced the vortex street and indicated that the paired vortices both kept the structure of the street intact and prepared the flow velocity for the onset of another pair.
