Jet deflection by Ram pressure and pressure gradients.
Abstract
The combined effects of galactic ram pressure and pressure gradients on beam bending are explored. The beam shape is parameterized by a K-term which is dependent on the beam radius, the ISM-JET density ratio, and the peak in the galactic rotation curve. The relationship of K to the intrinsic deflection angle and to the relative strengths of ram pressure and pressure gradients is discussed. The location and plane of the bends produced by the two forces can, for certain viewing angles, produce S-shaped morphologies in both arms of the beam. The model calculations were based on observational data from NGC 2110 reported by Wilson and Ulvestad (1982) and 3C 293 reported by van Breugel et al. (1984). A summary of the properties of projection effects as they apply to bent beams is given.
