Integral relations and asymptotic expressions in the theory of radiative transfer
Abstract
A study is made of the problem of radiative transfer in a plane layer for arbitrary phase function and any particle albedo. Integral relations for the radiation intensities for arbitrary energy sources are obtained directly from the equations of radiative transfer. By means of these relations, it is possible to find asymptotic expressions for the intensities of the radiation leaving a plane layer of large optical thickness. Asymptotic expressions are obtained as examples in three cases of the energy sources: (1) plane layer illuminated by parallel rays; (2) sources distributed uniformly in the layer; and (3) an emitting plane situated in the middle of the layer.
