An upper limit to the mass of the white dwarf in UX Ursae Majoris.
Abstract
Time-resolved spectroscopic observations of the novalike variable UX UMa are presented. The radial-velocity variations of the Hα emission lines are found to have a semiamplitude of 157±6 km/s. This result, in conjunction with the results of a radial velocity undertaken by Schlegel, Honeycutt, and Kaitchuck, imply that the mass of the white dwarf in this system must be less than 0.7 M_sun;.
