Nikuradse's experiment
Abstract
The velocity loss term for turbulent flow inside pipes coated with sand is reevaluated, based on Nikuradse's original measurements. A wake term is provided and corrections are made to allow for errors in the origin of the wake term. It is found that Nikuradse's results are consistent with a Karman constant value of 0.41 which does not vary with Reynolds number. More accurate values of the Karman constant cannot be determined from the slope of the logarithmic part of Nikuradse's velocity profile since there is no independent way to find the errors of origin.
