Sloshing of liquids in cylindrical tanks
Abstract
A technique for estimating the sloshing frequencies of liquids in a circular-cylindrical tank is developed, using the a posteriori/a priori inequalities approach of Kuttler and Sigillito (1978). Numerically computed approximations for the first five nonzero characteristic values are presented in a table and compared to these obtained using a conformal-mapping approach by Budiansky (1960). The implications of these findings for aircraft and spacecraft design are indicated.
