General study of the apparently average magnetic AP star theta Aurigae. I. Data and method.
Abstract
Spectrophotometric and spectroscopic observations of Theta Aurigae, obtained for the major part from 1977 on. The spectrophotometry covers the wavelength region from 3300 A to 7850 A, for 19 phases distributed over 80 percent of the rotation cycle. Spectra were taken at 10 phases, 8 of which are concentrated in 60 percent of the rotation cycle. The spectrophotometry is used to refine the rotation period proposed by Borra and Landstreet (1980). The derived rotation period equals P = 3.6190 + or - 0.0005 days. The spectra show rather broad lines that vary in strength and profile, although the changes are much less obvious than in the classical magnetic spectrum variables. A formalism is developed for interpreting the observed variations in terms of rings or spots on the surface.
