Iron-air battery development
Abstract
To date, air electrodes exceeded 500 discharge cycles. Fundamental studies for new structures, additions and catalysts show promising results. Failure analysis studies are discussed. Attempts to establish an accelerated life test procedure were unsuccessful. Several iron-air cell tests using available iron electrodes to demonstrate system compatibility are presented. Analysis of the auxiliary subsystem required for thermal control and electrolyte maintenance indicates that the subsystem requirements are compatible with the iron-air performance goals. A vehicle analysis using the iron-air system as the power propulsion source was completed for a variety of vehicles with range and power variables. Results are presented and discussed.
