The calibration procedure for measuring instruments by tracing them to the national standards is described. This is effected by a calibration chain consisting of a number of calibration offices at different levels within the calibration hierarchy. Unrecognized systematic deviations can be propagated by this method, but national and international intercomparisons are used to discover and eliminate such deviations. Methods for conducting intercomparisons are described and problems of the evaluation are discussed. The high requirements to be met for well-qualified and stable transfer standards are emphasized. On the basis of the results of an international intercomparison of the quantity RF voltage (1 V) at 500 MHz, the evaluation procedure is demonstrated and explained.
