Comparison of measured X-band reflectivity factors with those derived from S-band measurements at horizontal and vertical polarizations
Abstract
Dual-wavelength dual-polarization radar measurements in rainfall and ground-based disdrometer measurements are compared. It is shown that the horizontal S-band reflectivity and the differential reflectivity radar measurements at 10 cm are capable of reproducing both the scattering and attenuation properties of 3 cm electromagnetic waves. Empirically-derived relationships obtained from disdrometer measurements are sufficient for this purpose. Application to intermediate wavelengths is also considered. The results are presented in graphs and are in agreement with other multiple-parameter radar studies (Humphries and Barge, 1979).
