Optimization in bias measurement
Abstract
The objective of the study is to assess the effect of the simulated receiver response in the detection of nonuniformities through measurements of the excess bias. It is found that the optimum response varies with the model of nonuniformity considered. For a model related to linear variations of reflectivity in a logarithmic scale, the preferable characteristic parameter of the receiver, b, is in the region of the quadratic receiver. For a model related to reflectivity jumps within the measurement cell, the preferable b is smaller than in the above model. It is noted that further studies are needed to assess the effects of noise, saturation, antenna bandwidth, and signal quantization.
