Scattering and depolarization of electro-magnetic waves: Full wave solutions
Abstract
This report consists of three principal parts (Section 2, 3, and 4). The purpose of the research reported in Section 2 is to resolve the apparent discrepancies between different Physical Optics solutions for rough surface scattering. It is also shown in this section that the appearance of the so-called edge effect is due to premature truncation of a closed surface integral. In Section 3, full wave solutions are developed for the depolarization of the scattered radiation fields by conducting objects of irregular shape above rough land and sea. The research reported in this section deals primarily with the deterministic problem. In Section 4, the full wave approach, which accounts for both Bragg scattering and specular point scattering in a self-consistent manner, is employed to evaluate the scattering cross sections for composite models of rough surfaces. It is shown that the full wave solutions for the scattering cross sections can be expressed as a weighted sum of two sections. The like polarized cross sections which are associated with the large scale surface are independent of frequency and polarization .
