Free-surface vibration of a floating zone induced by surface tension driven oscillating flow
Abstract
The interaction between the oscillating thermal Marangoni convection in a cylindrical liquid bridge heated from the upper bound and the vibration of the free surface was studied by analyzing temperature oscillations due to the flow oscillation and the deflection of a laser sheet passing through the liquid bridge, employing a fast Fourier transformation analyzer. The frequencies of the free surface vibrations are strictly the same as those of the temperature oscillations and can be clearly separated from those of the capillary waves. A physical interpretation of the shape of the free surface deformation is given.
