The fluid physics module: New possibilities and applications
Abstract
The Spacelab fluid physics module, an apparatus for establishing a floating zone between two parallel coaxial disks, in a microgravity environment, is presented. Disturbances are applied to the liquid whose behavior is then observed and recorded on film. The stimuli can be mechanical, thermal or electrical. It is used on the first Spacelab payload to study floating zone stability, Marangoni convection, capillary phenomena and liquid-solid interactions. Improvements to data recording, fluid management and crew interfaces are outlined.
