Network control of satellite communication systems
Abstract
Network control techniques are discussed in terms of maximized communications throughput and future technology trends. Optimized network control is attained by installing a closed loop of key parameter measurements, issuance of control commands, assessment of effect and then reiteration of the process. Measured parameters include data errors, voice clarity, transmission power levels and background noise levels. Military applications in the presence of rain attenuation of signals or jamming are discussed, noting the necessity of automating the detection and correction procedures. For commercial operations, the critical factor is maximization of the capital investment while military missions demand high reliability. Continued development of VLSI microprocessors will result in control components being distributed among the control stations, the remote stations and the satellites.
