Feasibility study of an installation to simulate the flow of propellant gases in a gun barrel, part 2
Abstract
Measures to improve the simulation properties of a light-gas gun are described. By varying the propellant powder quantity and the filling pressure, the maximum pressure range (1000 to 3500 bar), the volume corresponding to this pressure (60 to 200 cc) and the projectile velocity (800 to 1000 m/sec) are measured. The gas temperature cannot be measured. The temperature is 1500 K, substantially lower than that existing in the propellant gas flow to be simulated. The propulsive piston and the compression tube were modified to obtain compression without shock wave effects and a braking of the piston such that the volume between the piston and the projectile base fulfills the specified conditions.
