Free electron lasers
Abstract
The Free Electron Laser (FEL) operates by means of an energy exchange between free electrons and an electromagnetic wave. Because transitions between fixed atomic or molecular energy levels are not involved, the FEL is inherently tunable with respect to wavelength. Attention is presently given to the physics, recent laboratory device developments, and key technical elements of FELs operating in the Compton regime at IR or shorter wavelengths.
