The effect of companding on orbit utilization of FDM/FM carriers
Abstract
The subjective reduction of noise in a telephone channel due to companding can also be brought to bear on interference. Thus, compandors afford a potential increase in satellite network capacity (C) and a reduction in satellite spacing (Delta Theta). A study is conducted of the relationship between C and Delta Theta for companded, as well as uncompanded cases, and using standard INTELSAT FDM/FM carriers it is shown that substantial improvement in the utilization of the geostationary orbit is possible.
