Present practice for the recording of the Earth magnetic field
Abstract
The magnetometers used as primary standards in magnetic observatories are described. The principles, evolution, and present state of development of classical atomic and saturated nuclei magnetometers are discussed. It is shown that the optimum choice is a proton magnetometer to measure the absolute value of the total field and two orthogonal saturated nuclei sensors to measure declination and inclination of the field.
