Ultrasonic crack tip method for the determination of crack depth
Abstract
A variant of the ultrasonic method of crack depth measurement is presented. The crack is detected by the reflecting square effect during slanting acoustic input with transverse waves. An additional echo besides the reflecting square echo is observed when the test head is shifted in the direction of the crack during heightened amplification. This additional echo is caused by secondary waves propagating from the crack tip. The crack depth is determined by the transit time differences between the echoes. Test results using the method for different conditions are briefly described.
