Rotatory motion of a rigid body near libration points
Abstract
An analytical study of the natural motion of rigid bodies near the center of mass is presented, summarizing the results obtained by Markeev (1981) and Markeev and Ruzanova (1982). Equations of motion for the center-of-mass of a rigid body and for two points of defined mass are derived within the bounds of the restricted planar-circular three-body problem. The periodic motions of an almost symmetric body and the evolution of oscillations in the long-period orbit are analyzed. The periodic orbits of the mass are shown to be near the triangular libration points. The implications of this analysis for space-exploration projects are indicated.
