Elementary analysis of vortex motion
Abstract
An elementary treatment of swirling flow in a vortex amplifier is developed, which yields static and total pressure variation in the amplifier. The turn-down of the amplifier is shown not to depend on the centrifugal action as is frequently suggested, but on reduction of the pressure recovery at the exit when swirl is introduced into the flow. Limitations of the analysis, which takes no account of variations in the axial direction, are discussed.
