Performance assessment of Serial Minimum Shift Keying (SMSK) modulation technique, volume 2
Abstract
Performance and hardware complexity of serial minimum shift keying (SMSK) and QPSK for satellite onboard data processing were compared. For modulation shift keying (MSK) SMSK is not as bandwidth efficient as QPSK. The SMSK-modem designs proposed by MOTOROLA are adaquate for broadband transmission. For narrowband transmission in a second step, RF-bandlimiting is applied. Motorola recovery circuits acquisition performance is doubtful. For partial response continuous phase modulation with 3RC pulses, signals can be detected with an ordinary SMSK-receiver and higher bandwidth efficiency is possible.
