Turbulence measurements relevant to sound generation of moving jets
Abstract
Ribner's self and shear noise formalism for jet noise has been adapted to deal with the case of moving jets. The approach taken follows that of Michalke and Michel who proposed a convected form of Lighthill's equation. The principal inputs to the model are mean velocity distributions and certain two point space-time correlations of the unsteady jet flow. The solutions were found to be quite sensitive to the choice length and time scales. The use of measured scales reported in the literature yielded the poorest fit. Turbulence measurements reported herein appear to resolve the dilemma and support the proposed scaling of Michalke and Michel.
