Synthesis and investigation of GdScO3 single crystals, activated by Nd(3+) ions
Abstract
Directional solidification in cylindrical containers was used to synthesize Nd(3+)-doped GdScO3 single crystals, materials which show promise for application as active laser elements. Single crystals of good optical quality with lengths up to 80 mm and diameter of 10 mm have been obtained with velocities of 1.5 mm/h, temperature gradients of 5-7 deg/mm, and container diameter of 12-14 mm. The absorption and luminescence spectra at 77 and 300 K were determined and used to calculate Stark energy levels.
