The hydrogen atom in weak electric and magnetic fields
Abstract
The behavior of the ground state of the hydrogen atom in weak electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields is studied in cases when the fields are parallel and perpendicular. A purely algebraic method based on the 'nonlinearization' procedure is employed to calculate the coefficients of the perturbation-theory series up to the term (E-squared)(H to the 4th). The problem of the polarizability and the magnetic susceptibility is discussed.
