Kinematic compatibility in the stream function-vorticity formulation
Abstract
Two-dimensional viscous flow is often calculated by means of the stream function (psi) and vorticity (omega). In the present investigation, it is shown that if the calculation of the pressure in a transient psi-omega-formulation in a step method has to be independent of the integration route, it is necessary that the stream function equation and the vorticity wall values derived from it, be discretized in a compatible or conservative way. Attention is given to the compatibility conditions, suitable approximations, the second-order accurate wall vorticity, and a comparison with other second-order expressions.
