A numerical analysis of a three-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting wave packet
Abstract
A numerical analysis has been carried out for a three-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting wave packet which, in an earlier work (Gilev et al., 1981), has been investigated experimentally in a low-turbulence wind tunnel. A qualitative comparison between the analytical and experimental data shows that recently developed methods for calculating instability wave packets (Zhigulev, 1982) correctly represent this phenomenon. It is noted that in some cases, the distribution of the amplitude functions within a packet is the determining factor.
