Evaluation of microstrip radiators as feeds for reflector antenna
Abstract
The potential of microstrip radiators as feeds for reflector antenna configurations compatible with multiple beam and scanning applications was investigated. While the microstrip array feeds offer many advantages over conventional waveguide systems, particularly with regard to mass, volume and cost, significant research and development effort is required before they can be applied to meet satellite communications systems specifications. Shortcomings are in bandwidth and the general degradations in the pattern characteristics caused by the effects of mutual coupling and the feedline radiation. Problems may be overcome by exploiting the advantages of beam forming at IF where the control devices are much easier to produce and the insertion and feed losses are less critical.
