Development of a large area color display
Abstract
Large area ( 30 sgcm) color LCD systems are discussed, emphasizing uniformity of spacing over the whole area and sealing. Color substances, contrast, and possibility of multiplexing were investigated for dichroic displays. A double guest-host type was chosen and a display of 100 sqcm including driving electronics was developed. Test results show a nematic range minus 40 to plus 90 C, viscosity 20 to 100 CST (at 20 C), dielectric constant anisotropy 0 (5 to 20), threshold voltage 1 to 3 V, and switching time 10 msec (at 20 C). Main applications are clocks, switching systems, and automotive systems.
