Study on optimal tracking strategy
Abstract
Theoretical formulations and numerical algorithms developed for optimal satellite tracking are presented. A tracking sequence is selected from a set of possible measurement instants so as to minimize a certain functional of the final error of the observations performed. The final error term of the cost functional is obtained through a Kalman filter algorithm. This approach was used to design a software package, applied to specific test cases for a general second order system and to EXOSAT. The optimal tracking sequence and the accuracy obtained depends on the number of measurements performed. The tracking data preprocessing task and the tracking pass length requirements were also studied.
