Threshold signal reception in electromagnetic interference environments. Part 3: An introduction to canonical threshold signal and parameter estimation
Abstract
The determination of optimum threshold estimators (and estimates) of signals and their parameters in general is addressed with focus on the critical question of where and how to terminate the (weak signal) series approximations to the exact expression from which the estimators are derived. The demonstration of explicit estimators under these circumstances, for a variety of signal parameters where the noise is nongaussian, usually is also considered. The procedure for obtaining the desired threshold estimators is embedded in the usual Bayes theory. The estimators themselves are locally optimum bayes estimators (LOBE's), just as their detection counterparts are the more familiar locally optimum bayes detectors (LOBO's).
