Active modeling of turbulence for wind-tunnel studies of bridge models
Abstract
A new method of turbulence generation for wind-tunnel studies of bridge models is investigated in the present study. In this method an additional energy is supplied to the mean flow by stirring air in an active manner. Two arrays of symmetric airfoils are placed in the smooth, uniform flow and oscillate pseudorandomly driven by an appropriate servo-system and input driving signals. Vertical and horizontal components are of main interest. Various configurations of the generator were considered and velocity measurements were taken in the near wake downstream of the generator. Turbulence intensities, scales and spectra were evaluated at different locations.
