Ray tracing in dissipative media
Abstract
Equations describing the motion of a wave packet in an anisotropic, weakly inhomogeneous, dissipative medium are derived within the framework of geometric optics, without introducing complex space coordinates. The dispersion function of upper hybrid waves in a two temperature electron plasma was evaluated numerically, using the computer program WHAMP. The results show that dissipation can have a strong influence on the group velocities of weakly damped waves.
