The average $100,000,000 design engineer
Abstract
The value of decisions made by the structural design engineer in designing a modern fighter is estimated over a billion dollars for a production run of 2500 aircraft. In the light of an analysis of the value of design decisions in the aerospace industry, it is shown that 100,000 dollars invested in computer aided design (CAD) support for the structural engineer can result in millions of dollars of savings for each percent improvement. It is emphasized that a particularly large increase in engineering productivity is achieved by integrating computer analyses with CAD systems.
