Theory of slipping instability for relativistic electron beams
Abstract
Instability of a relativistic electron beam with a smoothly varying local axial velocity is considered theoretically using a nonelectrostatic approximation for the interaction. The local slipping instability growth rate is calculated, and conditions for instability buildup are obtained which imply that the irrotational approximation is valid only in the nonrelativistic limit.
