Change formulas in the theory of dielectric waveguides
Abstract
Change formulas are defined as expressions describing the change in the propagation constants of waves guided by dielectric waveguides as the field frequency or the waveguide parameters change. These formulas can also express changes of the critical frequencies of guided waves as the waveguide parameters change. This paper derives such formulas in a very general form and examines a number of consequences and applications of these formulas. Attention is given to the calculation of the propagation constants, and phase and group velocities of waves in dielectric waveguides with a complex (noncircular) cross section and a complex transversely inhomogeneous medium. As an example, the analysis of the critical frequencies of waves in fiberoptic dielectric waveguides with a core of elliptical cross section is examined.
