On the possibility of microwave generation in the case of avalanche processes in dipole domains
Abstract
The attainment of oscillations in the short-wave part of the microwave range is considered with regard to the possibility of obtaining a domain-localized strong electric field of avalanche oscillation. A regime of multiple domains and the appearance of high-power oscillations at a frequency significantly greater than the transit-time (TT) frequency have been observed in previous studies of avalanche processes in long Gunn diodes. The present study attempts to explain these results by a mechanism of inhomogeneous charge-accumulation. It is proposed that this mechanism leads to the appearance of a virtual-anode regime at early stages of the development of avalanche processes; the intermediate stage is a multiple-virtual-electrode regime; and the final stage is a virtual-cathode regime. This latter regime provides for the achievement of non-TT microwave-oscillation regimes.
