Toward the optimization of a direct-detection optical receiver of analog HF and microwave signals
Abstract
A direct-detection photodetector (i.e., an avalanche photodiode) for the reception of optical radiation modulated by HF and microwave signals is analyzed in terms which are usually accepted and convenient for microwave frequencies. Analytical relations are derived in these terms for the threshold sensitivity of such a detector, and an optimization strategy is outlined.
