A review of the Yamato-74 meteorite collection
Abstract
Out of a total of 663 meteorites in the 1974 Yamato collection, 543 have been clasified, including all those weighing more than 100 g. Classification was done by examination of the specimens and petrological investigation of thin section of many of them, and review of the literature. The classified meteorites include 1 pallasite, 3 ureilites, 22 diogenites (all paired), 3 eucrites, 3 C2 chondrites, 1 E3-4 chondrite, 10 H3 chondrites, 4 L3 chondrites, 1 LL3 chondrite, 32 H4 chondrites, 3 L4 chondrites, 2 LL4 chondrites, 212 H5 chondrites (of which 149 are probably pieces of a single meteorite), 5 L5 chondrites, 193 H6 chondrites (of which 143 are probably pieces of a single meteorite), 42 L6 chondrites, 5 LL6 chondrites, and 1 H4 or L4 chondrite. There are 120 unclassified specimens in the Yamato-74 collection.
