Variational principle for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics
Abstract
A variational principle for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics is formulated from a Lagrangian point of view. This principle is used to calculate the properties of small-amplitude MHD waves and their interaction with the mean flow. The formalism is extended to include the generation of waves by an 'external' current. A simple transformation law for the Maxwell tensor in MHD is found which links the value of the tensor at some initial proper time to its actual value.
