Variational principle for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics
Abstract
A variational principle for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics is formulated from a Lagrangian point of view. This principle is used to calculate the properties of smallamplitude MHD waves and their interaction with the mean flow. The formalism is extended to include the generation of waves by an 'external' current. A simple transformation law for the Maxwell tensor in MHD is found which links the value of the tensor at some initial proper time to its actual value.
