Investigation of the oscillating forces at a vibrating, circular cylinder in crossflow. I, II
Abstract
The present investigation is mainly concerned with vortex excited oscillations of circular cylinders. An ideal objective of the investigation would involve the presentation of measured data which describe for arbitrary oscillations of a two-dimensional circular cylinder the response of the fluid in the form of forces affecting the body. However, the nonlinearities of the considered system made the completion of such a task impossible, and a number of simplifying assumptions regarding the formulation of the problem had to be made. The investigation includes a presentation of measured data which make it possible to describe the fluid-dynamic function in the case of harmonically oscillating circular cylinders. In addition, a calculation is conducted of the vibrational characteristics of elastically suspended circular cylinders, taking into account data which describe the fluid-dynamic subsystem. Attention is given to a classification of flow-induced oscillations, and experimental details and measurement procedures. Graphs, photographs, and diagrams are provided.
