Virtual Photon Structure Functions in Quantum Chromodynamics.
Abstract
We study QCD predictions for the photon structure functions F(,2)('(gamma))(x,Q('2),P('2)), F(,L)('(gamma))(x,Q('2),P('2)), W(,3)('(gamma))(x,Q('2),P('2)) in the region (LAMDA)('2) << P('2) << Q('2) (where P('2) and Q('2) are the mass squared of the target and probe photon, respectively). For this kinematical configuration also those hadronlike contributions which were incalculable in Bjorken limit can be fully taken into account. We write next to leading order Altarelli -Parisi equations and solve them numerically to obtain F(,2)('(gamma))(x,Q('2),P('2)) and F(,L)('(gamma))(x,Q('2),P('2)). We also present a detailed analysis of the hadronlike contributions in Bjorken limit and obtain a quantitative understanding of the poor convergence of the perturbation expansion for the calculable part in the small x region.
